Former Alticor (the company formerly known as Amway) president Dick DeVos announced his intentions to run for governor in 2006. He joins fellow GOP contenders Nancy Cassis (state senator in District 15, which basically covers western Oakland County) and Jack Hoogendyk (state representative in district 61, which basically covers the cities of Portage and Parchment, as well as Alamo, Kalamazoo, Oshtemo, Prairie Ronde, and Texas townships in Kalamazoo County), but he immediately would be considered the favorite for the Republicans based on statewide name recognition. I was hoping that his wife, Betsy, would seek a higher political office based on the fact that she twice served as the state party chairman. Perhaps we’ll see her in the state’s other big race in 2006. As I’ve stated before, last year’s presidential election marked a trend towards the Republican side, and I would hope the GOP would field serious candidates for both governor and U.S. Senate, because both incumbents should be easily defeatable. We got a while before the campaigns heat up, but you know I’ll be watching developments with great interest.
